在12世纪西恩（Se）统治者统治时期，这里曾是孟加拉的首府，而今天的纳巴德维浦更多的被人们认为是柴坦亚.玛哈帕布的出生地。该地位于加尔各答北部120公里处的巴吉拉蒂河与佳兰吉河交汇处，由于有九座小岛突出于佳兰吉河而得其名。纳巴德维浦在孟加拉省被称为瓦腊纳西，是印度教最重要的朝圣地之一，以其神圣庄严而著名。这里是传统的梵语学校的中心，也是希瓦派、佛教、性力教派和毗瑟挐派聚集的地方。仅在纳巴德维浦就有约185座神庙，尽管每一座都值得一看，但最著名的还属索纳古兰加（Soagouaga）神庙，内有圣人柴坦亚的金色雕像。在每年11月的狂欢节时，整个市区都人山人海。
