古瓦哈蒂以前之所以叫做普拉吉尤提斯布尔(Pragjyotishpur)，极有可能就是因为这座九大行星庙，Pragjyotish这个名字的意思就是占星术和天文学之地。这座庙宇建筑的形状犹如蜂巢，而且有九颗行星围绕在男性生殖器像(Lingam)或太阳神(Sun God)的周围。寺庙位于城市东边的一个小山丘上。
